Copilot training for managers who run a team

Microsoft 365 Copilot, hands-on, on your own management work

Bottom line: Copilot training for managers is a hands-on workshop for team leads and middle managers. You practise on your own week: the 1:1 prep, the Friday update to your boss, the meeting that needs owners and dates. Then we cover the second job, leading a team that is starting to use Copilot. You leave with the prompts you wrote yourself.

I've worked and trained on Gen AI since early 2022, and I've run 264 AI sessions in 112 organisations (updated October 2026).

Who this Copilot session is for

This is Copilot for middle managers: team leads, line and department managers, operations leads, heads of small functions. People who run a team and still do a lot of the work themselves. Mixed departments are fine, because they all manage people.

If the room is the leadership team, a separate session for the leadership team fits better (that one is a briefing, this one is practice). If your job is project plans and risk registers, look at Copilot for project managers. Here it's people management: 1:1s, team updates, delegation.

What managers practise, on their own week

Microsoft 365 Copilot for managers comes down to a handful of tasks you repeat every week. We take them one at a time, on your real material.

011:1 prep

Ask Copilot to pull together what you and one person have exchanged lately, and turn it into three things to raise.

02The Friday update to your own boss

Your notes and your week go in. A first version comes out, in your voice, ready for you to cut.

03Meeting follow-up in Teams

A Teams meeting becomes decisions, owners and dates, from the recap where your organisation has it enabled. The follow-up goes out the same day.

04The thread that ran to 40 replies

Outlook's Summary by Copilot gives you the key points. Draft with Copilot writes the first version of your reply. You send the final one.

05A delegation brief

What needs doing, what done looks like, by when. Written once, clearly, so nobody has to ask twice.

06Structure for a difficult conversation

Copilot drafts the structure of feedback before a review conversation. You write the words yourself (that part stays yours).

Each manager leaves with the prompts they wrote, on their own real tasks. That's the whole promise (small, and easy to keep).

03.

Leading a team that uses Copilot

Copilot adoption is a people problem, not a technology problem. A licence isn't the same as use: according to Recon Analytics (February 2026), only 35.8% of US workers who have Copilot available at work use it as their main AI tool. It's the pattern behind why Copilot rollouts stall. Your people probably use Copilot, Claude or Gemini on the side anyway.

So managers go first, on their own tasks, and take three habits back to the team:

01Use it where the team can see

Open Copilot in the weekly meeting. Ask it for the recap. Let people watch you check it.

02Ask "what did you try this week?"

One question, every week. The answers become your team's best prompt library.

03Set the rule: every output is a draft

Decide together what never goes out without a human check. Names, numbers, anything about an individual's performance.

Copilot champions are volunteers who support their peers. Managers are not champions, they make room for them.

04.

How the Copilot training for managers runs

1.5 to 4 hours, depending on the format, for up to 20 participants. On site or online, same hands-on format. Everyone brings real tasks and works on their own machine, with a Copilot licence assigned on the day. Some features, like the AI summary in a Teams meeting recap, need that licence (or Teams Premium) and a meeting transcript.

Many managers to train? A larger group splits into several sessions, and there's more on Copilot training across a large organisation. For the rest of the team, the general Copilot workshop fits mixed roles. Department-specific work, say a workshop for the sales team, is its own session.

05.

What Microsoft 365 Copilot can and cannot see

Microsoft says Copilot only surfaces organisational data to which the user has at least view permission (Microsoft privacy documentation, 2026). The workshop doesn't change any permissions or settings in your tenant. EU questions have their own page: Copilot, GDPR and EU data residency.

Copilot writes the first draft, the final words stay with you. People decisions stay human, and we don't use Copilot to evaluate staff.

06.

Who runs it

I do. I'm an AI consultant and trainer, focused on AI transformation and using AI at work. Organisations I have worked with include Intel, Roche, EY, Deloitte, KLA, Amdocs, monday.com, Sapiens, Cellebrite, Rapyd, Elbit Systems and Veho. Those were AI lectures and workshops of different kinds, not all of them for managers.

The product changes constantly, and so do the workshops (what you saw in the menu last month may already have moved).

Common questions

What does Copilot training for managers actually cover?

A hands-on workshop where managers use Copilot on their own daily work: turning meeting notes into a status update, summarising a long Outlook or Teams thread, drafting the structure of feedback before a review conversation. Everyone leaves with their own prompts.

How long is it, how many people can join, and can it run online?

1.5 to 4 hours, depending on the format, for up to 20 participants. It works on site or online, and the details are agreed on a short call.

How is it different from Copilot training for executives?

The executive session is a briefing for the leadership team (there's also the 90-minute executive briefing). This one is for the managers in the middle, who practise on their own management tasks instead of watching demos.

We already pay for Copilot licences. Why do our managers need training?

Because a licence isn't the same as use. The workshop closes that gap on your managers' own work, and they then set the example for their teams.
