What copilot champions training covers
This is not a bigger lunch and learn with more people in the room. It is 2 sessions that hand a small group the skill and confidence to teach their own colleagues Copilot after I leave. Microsoft runs a similar model internally, at a scale most organisations will never need: roughly 10,000 Copilot Champs, train-the-trainer.
(You do not need 10,000 of anything. You need enough champions, in the right seats, to make Copilot visible inside teams instead of only inside a slide from IT.)
What Champions in a Box actually is
2 sessions, 2 hours each, live online, training a small group to run their own team's Copilot adoption going forward. It is not a one-off session for end users, it is Copilot train-the-trainer done properly: your people leave able to teach it, not just use it.
The math: champions at 1 to 20
ShareGate's guidance, which I use as a sizing starting point for this Copilot train-the-trainer model, puts the ratio at roughly 1 champion per 20 employees. Training should happen within 48 hours of a licence being assigned, while the habit is still forming, not weeks later.
A department of 15 might get by with 1 champion. A department of 90 probably wants 4 or 5, spread across teams, not stacked in one corner.
01Pick for pain, not for enthusiasm
The champions who stick with it are usually the ones who had a real problem Copilot actually solved for them first. Enthusiasm without a real use case fades by week 3.
2 sessions, then they run it
Session 1 is hands-on: champions work on their own team's real tasks, so they are genuinely capable before being asked to teach anyone. Session 2 turns them into trainers: how to run a short session, and how to handle the questions that come up in someone else's first week.
Champions need time set aside, in writing, to mentor. Not squeezed in between their actual job. (It's one of my 5 leadership insights for any Copilot rollout, and it's the one organisations skip first.) Give them no hours, and they quietly stop.
01Session 1: become genuinely good at it
Real files, real recurring tasks, the same depth as a full Team Workshop, but for a smaller group who will carry it forward.
02Session 2: become able to teach it
How to run a 20 to 30 minute session, and answer the questions that come up in someone's first week using it, with a ready lunch and learn deck so they are not starting from scratch.
Not the same thing as Microsoft's Copilot Champions Program
Microsoft runs its own internal Copilot Champions Program, a large-scale, train-the-trainer effort inside Microsoft itself. This page sells something smaller: a 2-session, bookable programme any organisation can buy this month, sized to your team.
I have no commercial interest in Microsoft. I get paid the same regardless of which model you end up using, and I will tell you honestly if a lighter version is all you need.
