Is Microsoft 365 Copilot Worth It for Your Business?

Bottom line: is Microsoft 365 Copilot worth it for your business? Yes for your leaders and AI champions, and for anyone who hits the limits of free Copilot Chat and asks for a license. No as a blanket purchase for everyone.

Leaders and AI champions use Copilot every working day. Everyone else starts in Copilot Chat and asks for a paid license when real work needs more, and gets it within days.

I've worked with Gen AI and trained teams on it since early 2022, and so far I've run 264 AI sessions in 112 organisations (updated October 2026).

Is Copilot worth it for business? The short answer

It's worth the money for the people who use it, and not as a blanket purchase. Give paid Microsoft 365 Copilot (now called Microsoft Copilot) licenses to your leaders and AI champions first, let everyone else start in free Copilot Chat, and give a paid license to anyone who hits a real limit and asks for one (within a few days, not weeks).

The verdict

Eyal Marcus's verdict: worth it for leaders and AI champions who use it, and for people who hit the limits of free Copilot Chat. Not as a blanket purchase.

Is Microsoft Copilot worth the money? Answer it person by person. Leaders and AI champions: yes. People who hit a wall and asked: yes, and fast. Everyone else: not yet.

The policy and the request flow live on who should get a Copilot license first.

02.

Worth it: leaders who actually use it

Leaders and your AI champions should have a paid license, learn it and use it. That's my rule, not Microsoft's, with 2 reasons.

First, leaders are the role model. Employees copy what management does, so a manager who doesn't use Copilot can't lead adoption.

Second, only someone who uses the paid version can judge whose request makes sense.

Want your leaders to learn it? See Copilot training for executives.

Worth it: people who hit the limits of free Copilot Chat

For many people, free Copilot Chat is enough to start. It gives web-grounded chat with enterprise data protection, file uploads and image generation (Microsoft Learn, September 2026).

It runs out in 3 places, the stuck points I hear in my workshops:

  • 1. Own files, chats and meetings. Working across the files, Teams chats and meetings people already have, without uploading them. Free Chat needs it supplied with the prompt (Microsoft Learn, October 2026).
  • 2. Copilot inside the apps. Full Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint on real work documents. What people see varies with the license and the tenant (Microsoft Learn, September 2026).
  • 3. Agents on company data. Free Chat lists advanced agents as "Limited". Licensed users get agent use within fair-use limits (Microsoft Learn, August 2026).

Someone who hits one asks their direct manager, who quickly confirms real Copilot Chat use and a real limit. IT assigns the license, all within a few days. Full comparison: Copilot Chat vs Microsoft 365 Copilot.

04.

Not yet: everyone else

Not yet. Employees on an eligible Microsoft 365 plan can use Copilot Chat at no extra cost (Microsoft Learn, October 2026), and according to Recon Analytics (February 2026), only 35.8% of US workers who have Copilot available at work use it as their main AI tool. A license should follow real use, not come before it.

So never buy 1,000 licenses and then chase people to use them. More in why Copilot rollouts stall.

05.

What it costs, and whether that is worth it in the budget

Microsoft's list price is $30 per user per month, paid yearly, and a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan is required (Microsoft list price, checked 16 October 2026). That's $360 a year per seat, or $360,000 for 1,000 seats, license line only, before any agreement discount (my arithmetic).

Microsoft also lists a lower price for Copilot Business, for organizations of up to 300 users on an eligible Microsoft 365 Business plan. If you're in finance asking whether Copilot is worth it, the question isn't $30. It's whether Microsoft 365 Copilot is worth the cost for this one person.

The other budget lines are in Copilot total cost of ownership. For the UK and EU, see Copilot licence cost in the UK and EU.

06.

How to tell if it is paying off

Measure real use first. Microsoft's Copilot Dashboard shows readiness, adoption, impact and sentiment, and it switches on once your tenant has one Copilot license (Microsoft Learn, September 2026).

Microsoft counts a user as active after one intentional action, such as submitting a prompt, in your chosen window. Opening the chat pane doesn't count (Microsoft Learn, July 2026). "Active" is a low bar, so dashboards flatter.

Who is behind this verdict

AI consultant and trainer, focused on AI transformation and using AI at work (about Eyal Marcus). The names at the top are organisations I have worked with. That doesn't mean they follow this method.

I sell Copilot training, so weigh this verdict accordingly (the method means fewer licenses, for what that's worth). Copilot changes constantly, and so do my lectures and workshops.

Common questions

Is Microsoft 365 Copilot worth the money for a business?

It's worth the money for the people who use it, not as a blanket purchase. Paid licenses go to your leaders and AI champions first, everyone else starts in free Copilot Chat, and anyone who hits a real limit and asks gets one.

Is Copilot worth it for every employee?

Not yet. According to Recon Analytics (February 2026), only 35.8% of US workers who have Copilot available at work use it as their main AI tool. A license should follow real use, not come before it.

Is free Copilot Chat enough?

For many people it is, to start. Free Copilot Chat gives web-grounded chat and file uploads. It runs out when someone needs Copilot on their own files, chats and meetings, inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint, or with advanced agents (Microsoft Learn, September 2026).

Is Copilot worth it for a small business?

The same rule applies, at a lower price. Copilot Business is listed for up to 300 users, on an eligible Microsoft 365 Business plan (Microsoft, checked 16 October 2026). Start with the owner or the leadership team, then add a license when someone asks.

How do I know if Copilot is paying off?

Start with real use. Microsoft counts a user as active after one intentional action, like submitting a prompt, so "active" is a low bar (Microsoft Learn, September and July 2026).

What is the ROI of Microsoft 365 Copilot?

This page doesn't quote an ROI or time-saved percentage, because the figures in circulation come from vendors or can't be traced to a primary source. To build your own, see how to build the business case.
