Copilot Prompts for PowerPoint: Build, Fix and Present a Deck

The short answer: the best Copilot prompts for PowerPoint name the audience, the length and what each slide is for, and they come in rounds. First you build, then you fix, then you get ready to present. Open Copilot from the button in the corner of the slide (it's on by default in the prompt box) and keep going in the same chat.

Below: 10 prompts across the 3 rounds, Microsoft's own examples marked as such, a section on speaker notes, and the limits that make some prompts fail.

01.

Before the first prompt

Microsoft's prompt framework has 4 parts: the goal, the context, your expectations and the source. Only the goal is required, but Microsoft admits you'll often need more than a goal to get what you want. It also says to expect some back-and-forth, and that the same prompt can give different answers each time. So a prompt that worked once is worth saving.

1It asks before it builds

When you describe a new deck, Copilot may ask a few clarifying questions first, like who the audience is and what style you want. Then it shows an outline, and builds the slides when you tell it to. Fix the outline. It's the cheapest moment to change your mind.

21 language per deck

Microsoft's December 2025 page says that when you create a deck from a prompt, Copilot supports a single output language at a time. Need the German and English version? That's 2 decks.

3PowerPoint files only

Copilot in PowerPoint works with .ppt and .pptx files and needs an internet connection.

02.

Prompts to build a deck

Prompt (Microsoft's own example)

Create a short presentation about time management.

Prompt, goal + context + expectations

Create a 10-slide presentation for our leadership team about moving customer support to 24/7. They're busy and sceptical, so open with the cost of doing nothing. 1 heading and up to 3 bullets per slide.

Microsoft's version is a fine test. The second one is what I'd actually send. Same tool, and I'd expect a very different first draft. Need the deck in your company template? That's its own job, covered in making Copilot use your company template.

03.

Prompts to build from a file

Prompt (Microsoft's own example)

Create an onboarding presentation based on this /[document].

Type / to pick the file. With the work licence you can start from a Word document or a PDF. One catch from Microsoft's December 2025 FAQ: when you reference a file, you can't add more context in the same prompt. That may have changed since, but the workaround is easy. Build first, then send your instructions as a follow-up. The full steps are in creating a PowerPoint from a Word document.

04.

Prompts to fix a deck you already have

Rewrites now run through Copilot chat. Microsoft's March 2026 Message Center post lists 2 limits: no partial-text rewrite, and no tables, charts or other non-text objects.

Prompt (Microsoft's own example)

Help me re-write the bullets on this slide.

Prompt

Find the 3 slides with the most text and cut each one down to a heading and 3 bullets. Move the detail into the speaker notes.

1Call a built-in skill by name

Microsoft lists 3 built-in skills in Copilot in PowerPoint: Review this presentation, Visualize this slide and Prepare for Questions. Run the first one before anyone else reviews your deck.

2Let it handle the comments

Since July 2026 Copilot in PowerPoint can write, reply to and resolve comments inside a presentation. Handy for the deck that came back from review covered in them.

3Design Suggestions, with a language catch

For Copilot users, Designer is now called Design Suggestions, on the Home or Design tabs. Microsoft says it only officially supports the en-US locale, and that you should check anything in other languages with a native speaker before sharing it. For a German, French or Dutch deck, take that seriously.

05.

Copilot speaker notes: yes, it can add them

Can Copilot add speaker notes to slides? Yes. Microsoft's Message Center post from March 2026 says users can generate speaker notes for one slide or a whole presentation through chat. The notes go straight into the Notes pane, and you refine them with more prompts.

This is where I'd use Copilot first, honestly. The slides are for the room. The notes are for you, and they're the part nobody ever has time to write.

Prompt (Microsoft's own example)

Add speaker notes to this slide.

Prompt

Add speaker notes to every slide. About 1 minute of talking each, conversational, and end each note with a line that leads into the next slide.

Prompt (Microsoft's own example)

What are some potential questions that I might be asked by the audience who I present this to?

Keep one line: per Microsoft's December 2025 page, slides with AI-generated images carry an "AI-generated" image source in their speaker notes. When you rewrite the notes, leave it there.
06.

Copilot PowerPoint summarize prompts

Microsoft's support page says Copilot in PowerPoint can summarise presentations of up to approximately 40,000 words. That page dates from 2025, but it's the current documented number. Start with Microsoft's prompt, then try its follow-ups, Show key slides and Show action items.

Prompt (Microsoft's own example)

Summarize this presentation.

Prompt

Summarize this presentation in 5 bullets for someone who missed the meeting, then list every decision with its owner.

07.

What it gets wrong, and what to check

1Big decks

Microsoft says large or complex presentations may exceed system limits. If a long deck stalls, work on it section by section.

2Tables and charts

Rewrite doesn't touch them. Every number on a chart slide is yours to check and fix by hand.

3The licence

Free Copilot Chat users get Basic access in PowerPoint (the bullets rewrite and the audience questions above both come from Microsoft's list of free-tier examples). Branding with your organisation's template needs the paid licence. And in some large organisations, people without the paid licence lost Copilot inside PowerPoint in April 2026.

For what Copilot in PowerPoint builds in general, see Microsoft Copilot for PowerPoint. For prompts in every other app, there's my Microsoft 365 Copilot prompt library.

Questions about Copilot prompts for PowerPoint

What are the best Copilot prompts for PowerPoint?

The ones that name the audience, the number of slides and the format of each slide. Build the deck first, then use follow-up prompts in the same chat to rewrite slides, add speaker notes and summarise.

Can Copilot add speaker notes to slides?

Yes. Ask Copilot to add speaker notes to one slide or the whole presentation. It writes them straight into the Notes pane, and you refine them with follow-up prompts.

Can Copilot summarize a PowerPoint presentation?

Yes. Type Summarize this presentation in the Copilot pane. Microsoft's support page says it can summarise presentations of up to approximately 40,000 words.

Why won't Copilot rewrite the text in my table?

Rewrite in PowerPoint doesn't support tables, charts or other non-text objects, and it doesn't rewrite part of a text box either. Edit those by hand.

Can I use Copilot in PowerPoint without the paid licence?

Free Copilot Chat users get Basic access in PowerPoint, with exceptions in some large organisations since April 2026. Using your organisation's branding needs the paid licence.

Copilot, live online

Want your team building decks this way?

I run live online Copilot workshops for groups of up to 20 people, from 1.5 to 4 hours. If I had 10 minutes of a session for PowerPoint, I'd spend them on speaker notes.
